Tournament Organizer’s Guide

Formats, player sign-up, rounds, top cuts, and event-day best practices.

1. What Is a DDR Tournament?

A Tournament is a self-contained competitive event with a fixed roster of Seekers, a set of scheduled rounds, and — optionally — a final elimination bracket that crowns a Champion. Pairings, results, standings, tiebreakers, and the crowning are all tracked live on the tournament page.

Tournaments differ from Leagues (long-running seasonal ladders) and casual Matches (self-reported one-off games). Pick a tournament whenever you want a fixed roster facing structured pairings across a defined event.

2. Supported formats

You name the format on creation ("Swiss", "Swiss + Top 8", "Single Elimination"). The pairing engine supports two mechanics you can mix and match:

Swiss rounds

  • Every Seeker plays every round; no one is eliminated.
  • Round 1 is randomized. Rounds 2+ pair players with similar records.
  • Best for 8–64 players, typically 3–6 rounds.

Top cut / single elimination

  • After Swiss, the top N Seekers (4, 8, or 16) advance to a bracket.
  • The site auto-seeds by final Swiss placement.
  • Losers are out; the last Seeker standing is Champion.

Recommended structures

  • Small (8–12): 3 Swiss, Top 4.
  • Medium (16–32): 4–5 Swiss, Top 8.
  • Large (33+): 5–6 Swiss, Top 8 or Top 16.
  • Quick showdowns: skip Swiss, seed straight into an 8-player bracket.

3. Player sign-up — step by step

  1. Sign in and open Great Tournaments from the nav.
  2. Find a tournament tagged Muster Open and click through.
  3. Click Register. Your seat is reserved instantly.
  4. Before the event, return and click Check In. Only checked-in Seekers are paired in Round 1.
  5. Need to bow out? Click Withdraw before pairings, or Drop after any round.

Enable notifications — the bell alerts you when pairings post and when opponents submit a result awaiting your confirmation.

4. Running a tournament — TO workflow

Phase A · Before the event

  1. From Great Tournaments, click Decree a Tournament.
  2. Fill in name, format, location, dates, max players, spoils, and description. Status = Muster Open.
  3. Share the tournament URL (Tavern, Discord, in-store).
  4. Monitor the roster and remind Seekers 24 hours out.

Phase B · Starting the event

  1. Close check-in 5 minutes before start.
  2. Set status to In Progress.
  3. Click Generate Next Round — Round 1 pairs all checked-in Seekers randomly.
  4. Announce table numbers and start the round timer (50 minutes is standard).

Phase C · Each round

  1. Players play; one submits the result on their pairing card.
  2. The opponent Confirms or Disputes. Confirmed results lock in immediately.
  3. For disputes, the TO investigates and clicks Override.
  4. When every result is confirmed, click Generate Next Round.

Phase D · Cutting to top N

  1. Review the Standings tab — tiebreakers (OMW%, GW%, OGW%) apply automatically.
  2. Click Make Top Cut and choose 4, 8, or 16. Bracket auto-seeds by Swiss placement.
  3. Report bracket results the same way. Winners advance; losers are out.

Phase E · Finalizing

  1. Crown the Champion when the final match resolves — enter name and faction.
  2. Set status to Concluded. The event archives and appears on the Champions page.
  3. Optional: post a wrap-up thread in the Tavern.

5. Best practices

Before

  • Publish rules, banned lists, and expected play speed in the description.
  • Announce round count and cut structure upfront.
  • Cap registration if venue space is limited.

During

  • Use a visible round timer. Announce "5 minutes" and "time — finish the current turn."
  • Walk the floor; answer rules questions quickly and consistently.
  • Never generate the next round until every current result is confirmed.

Handling disputes

  • Hear both players separately before ruling.
  • Favor the game state as it stood at the disputed moment.
  • Record the ruling in pairing notes so it survives in the record.

After

  • Crown the Champion before you leave the venue.
  • Thank your Seekers publicly in the Tavern.
  • Note lessons learned for the next event.
