Malediction buying guide: what to get first

Malediction has a small entry cost compared to most miniatures games, and buying in the wrong order is the main way people spend more than they needed to.

For current product availability and pricing always check the official Malediction store; this guide covers what each item is for and the order that makes sense.

What you need for your first game

  • One faction warband — your Seeker and the units that go with it.
  • A legal deck for that Seeker.
  • One terrain set plus its matching Terrain card. Every player brings their own.
  • Husks, dice, tokens and a tape measure.
  • A play surface — 30" x 30" is the standard Clash battlefield.

Why the terrain set matters more than people expect

Terrain is not scenery you borrow from the table. Each player brings a set and its card, and the abilities on that card apply to everyone standing on your pieces. Your terrain is a real part of your list, and the game mode dictates how many large, medium and small pieces come with you.

Expanding with reinforcements

Additional packs give a faction more units, more answers and more deck-building options rather than a straight upgrade. Buy a reinforcement once you can name the problem it solves in your list — usually a gap the deck analysis flagged, or a matchup your match history shows you keep losing.

A sensible order for a second purchase

  • Play five to ten games with one warband first.
  • Add cards and units that fix a known weakness in your existing deck.
  • Add a second faction only when you want a different playstyle, not for variety alone.
  • Terrain and tokens before a third warband — they improve every game you play.

Frequently asked questions

What should I buy after my first Malediction warband?
Reinforcements that fix a specific weakness in your current deck, identified from your match history or a deck analysis, rather than a second faction bought for variety.
